How much do those split A/C systems cost, again?
Not looking like I’ll be getting much more done in the garage today. Too hot, but
mostly too humid. It’s just as bad outside, may be a few degrees cooler but it’s been storming
on and off so the humidity would get much worse if I opened the door.

Got any ventilation? I see some drywall, so I’m guessing that you have a finished or semi-finished garage.

My wish list for my next house:
1) a 2+ car garage (currently I have a single)
2) a window in that garage for a window AC unit

Not really. There’s a ceiling fan which is currently turned off, but that just moves the heat around (it’s more for in winter when the furnace is running).
An exhaust fan (or two) may not be a bad idea, even if just venting into the attic. Just need to make sure they can be sealed up before winter so all the heat doesn’t go out then, too
.

Even a vent without a fan would help. I installed one of those turbine vents on the roof of my garage last year, and it’s made a big difference. My garage isn’t insulated or anything, so you might benefit even more than I did from it .

Window is insecure. I’ve considered building in a window a/c unit, though. Just frame it like a window but the size of the unit...

The walls are insulated but not the ceiling (it’s on the to-do-before-winter list). It tends to stay cooler than outside if I keep the doors closed (and don’t park a hot car in it) but the humidity can get out of hand. Two springs ago (before I had the furnace) I had serious condensation issues every time the weather was warm and damp (as it is in spring).
Maybe when I insulate I’ll stick a couple exhaust fans through the ceiling.

“ 85, eh? Still winter there?”
—half of the US right now

It’s not the temperature, it’s the humidity. It’s 85 degrees and there’s nearly dew on the floor and tools. When I was out in the desert in southern CA and AZ it was a hundred degrees and far more comfortable than this.

I think they have strip non-vented A/Cs now that you can mount on the wall. There’s a big one in the lobby of our building ... not sure if it’s vented.

Those are the split system A/C unit, they’re very nice (there’s the thing you see inside, and some pipes to a standalone condenser/compressor outside) but not exactly cheap.

Have you considered garage door insulation? I did my two car garage door last year and it’s definitely a few degrees cooler in there now during the summer.

It’s on the list. I need to insulate the ceiling (for the 6 months out of the year the heat runs) but after I get that taken care of I do plan to insulate the doors.

Yeah, I’ve done it that way too. I live in a zero crime area, so i forgot that the easy -break-in-ness is a thing to be concerned about .
Mini-split units are roughly 1500-2000, a 6000 BTU window unit is like $150 and baseboard heaters are about $100 each...so you can guess what I’d choose.

A feature for when you sell the house? A way to save money repairs because DIY?

When they were installing the furnace out there last year on a 90 degree day in September, I joked about having them come back in a year for A/C. It’s certainly not in the budget for this year, though.

We just bought the apartment we’ve rented forever - A/C replacement a couple months ago was putting in a nice Frigid aire w/ wifi capability - 400 bucks and it cools the entire apartment.
